A triptych is a painting in three parts designed to be displayed on the altar of a religious building. It has two wings which can be folded over the central panel. The triptych of the Master of the Embroidered Foliage places particular emphasis on the figure of the Virgin Mary, whose cult grew in the Middle Ages.
