Canopic jars

664 - 332 BC
The mummy's three musketeers

Ovoid in shape and with an animal-head stopper, these three jars featured in the Lille Palais des Beaux-Arts' collection are known as "canopic jars". This name refers to the cult statues of the god Osiris, rediscovered in the town of Canopus (Northern Egypt) with the same shape. However, their purpose was entirely different: they served to conserve the viscera of the dead after mummification.
